Service Description

NOTE: the drop-in fee is $15 per session. To confirm the meeting location of the week and register and pay, email Katie at Grow your writing practice with your local community during these weekly, 90-minute sessions in Redlands at Heritage Park. Writing practice is a way to grow our writing confidence and trust our voices. It's not writing like you've done it before: there is no good or bad with writing practice. In short, here are the "Rules of Writing Practice" as taught by Natalie Goldberg in her book "Writing Down the Bones," which we'll read over the course of these 14 weeks: 1) Keep the hand moving (no editing or crossing out) 2) There is no good or bad 3) We sit (meditate) prior to beginning writing practice as a way to anchor our minds 4) We read aloud what we wrote afterwards (optional) with NO COMMENT Writing practice is for anyone who is interested in starting or growing their practice. Done regularly, it can help wake you up to what's in front of you and help you to trust your voice and mind. It's often a beneficial, meditative component to people's self-care routines, but it can also impact the way you write and even live in general, too. The overall structure each week is: - Book discussion ~20 minutes - Sitting meditation ~5 minutes - Writing practice ~40 minutes - Reading in small groups ~20 minutes We'll meet Saturdays from 12:30-2:00pm at Heritage Park in Redlands at the covered picnic tables. A back-up location will be shared for days when weather is not conducive to meeting outside (at Katie's home in Redlands) including extreme heat, wind, or poor air quality due to fires. Our meetings begin Saturday, August 13th and run through December 3rd (with several weeks without a meeting) and drop-ins are welcome at $15 per session to be paid upon arrival. Come early to enjoy the Farmer's Market at the Grove School which takes place from 8-12 next to Heritage Park; there are both breakfast and lunch options usually available for those who wish to come early to socialize, shop, and enjoy a meal outside before we begin at 12:30.
