ABOUT THE WRITING PRACTICE RETREAT

May 14-19

In the tradition of Natalie Goldberg, this retreat is rooted in writing practice. With a morning and afternoon session, you can sink more deeply into your practice, learning to wake up to this life and to trust your mind. Beginning and ending each day with meditation, you'll experience a deeper stillness in this serene mountain environment. We'll be in gentle silence until dinner each day in order not to distill our energy in our writing. Come and immerse yourself in this nourishing space and see what unfolds.

Meals not provided.
This is an alcohol- and drug-free retreat.

WRITING PRACTICE SESSIONS

This retreat is open to new and experienced writing practice students. While no experience is necessary, participants are required to have read Writing Down the Bones and The True Secret of Writing by Natalie Goldberg prior to the retreat along with 2 additional texts, all of which will be discussed in the afternoon sessions. During our twice-daily sessions, we will do timed writing practice on various topics and of varying lengths followed by optional reading. Participants are asked to attend both sessions. If you are looking to work on a specific writing project, consider the next week's writing salon option instead.

ABOUT THE WRITING SALON WEEK

May 21-26th

This is a week for those wishing to extend their stay into a second week of independent practice or for those who prefer to come just for this week. The only official meeting each day will be an afternoon feedback workshop but the twice-daily meditations will continue at the same times. We will be in gentle silence until the afternoon workshop.

This is a great week to carry on your writing practice, focus on an essay or book project, or bunker down to get some editing done. Participants will come to the afternoon sessions with a short piece to share and receive feedback, facilitated by Katie.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER & HOST

Katie Allen, MA

I've been teaching for over 12 years and have added on writing retreats since 2021. I've taught in the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, China, and have traveled to over 30 countries altogether. I published my first book in 2021 after reading "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg, which helped free me of my inner critic so I could finally write my story and share it with the world. I then had a chance to study in-person with her for 2 weeks and I've been focusing on carrying on her lineage ever since, teaching writing workshops online and hosting retreats in-person based on her teachings and modeling my retreats after her own while bringing my own skills and personality to the experience.

TESTIMONIALS

Katie is a great facilitator for creating meditation, writing and love of nature during her retreats. You feel a sense of belonging and a reaffirmation of why we write. Would highly recommend the retreat experience!

Siw Heede, Past Idyllwild Retreat Participant

I highly recommend attending Katie's writing retreats. At the one I attended, everything was very well organized, the lodging comfortable and charming. The insightful topics Katie picked allowed us to discover things about ourselves. It was mentally stimulating. We got to go on walks in nature with others or on your own. Everything was voluntary, so you could create your own flow. I came back renewed and very happy to have attended. I will definitely return.
